Mayor of Merton, Councillor David Williams, recently raised in the region of £14,000 for The Wimbledon Guild of Social Welfare at the Mayor’s charity ball.
Hosted at the world famous All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, the ball raised money to buy the charity a vehicle with disabled access to support their activities. The money will be added to the profits already made from charity events and donations accumulated during Councillor David Williams’ year as Mayor. Entertainment at the ball was provided by BBC Young Musician harp finalist, Cecilia Sultana De Maria, the London City Big Band and the World of Dance. Fundraising activities included a table raffle, silent auction and live auction with prizes such as a framed Wimbledon tennis shirt signed by Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray which was donated by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, two tickets for Prime Minster’s Questions and lunch donated by Siobhain McDonagh MP and a bottle of House of Commons Scotch Whisky, signed by The Rt Hon Theresa May MP and The Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP, donated by Stephen Hammond MP.
With 214 guests including nine mayors from the London Boroughs of Greenwich, Kingston, Sutton, Hillingdon, Wandsworth, Richmond, Hammersmith and Fulham, Havering, and Croydon, the ball was also attended by sponsors.
Mayor of Merton, Councillor David Williams said: ‘This is an amazing sum of money to have raised from a great event. None of this would have been made possible without a great team effort by my office and The Wimbledon Guild. I would like to thank each of them for their individual contributions and equally, my thanks go to our sponsors, both businesses and individuals, for their generosity and donations of cash and gifts to support our charitable ambition.’
Chief Executive of The Wimbledon Guild, Wendy Pridmore said: ‘I’d like to thank everyone who attended the Mayor’s Ball for their great generosity. I’m delighted that the money raised will provide us with new transport which will mean so much to everyone who uses our services. Many thanks to the Mayor and the hardworking team at his office.’
