Caroline Cooper-Marbiah from the Labour Party has been elected Colliers Wood new councillor tonight, following a 29.85 per cent turnout.

A by-election was called in Colliers Wood at the end of June following the sad death of Councillor Gam Gurung, who served as a member of Merton council from 2010.

This is the first stand alone by-election to be called in Merton since 2003.

The breakdown of votes are as follow:

Labour Party: Caroline Cooper-Marbiah: 1685
Conservative Party: Peter Lord: 441
UKIP: Shafqat Janjua: 157
Liberal Democrats: Phil Ling: 52
