Angling success for Merton brothers

Two young anglers and brothers from Morden have each been awarded a gold medal in the London Youth Games finals.

Merton’s representatives in the London Youth Games angling competition, Billy and Harry Reeder, won gold in the senior and junior categories. Sixteen year old Billy and 14 year old Harry are both Raynes Park High School students.

With a record 23 boroughs taking part, this year’s finals took place at Tylers Common Fishery and was supported by the Environment Agency.

As Europe’s largest youth sport competition featuring more than 35 different sports, the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games includes everything from angling to weightlifting as well as football, swimming, gymnastics, fencing and much more.

Cabinet member for community and culture Councillor Nick Draper said: ‘A massive congratulations to everyone who represented Merton in the London Youth Games, particularly to Billy and Harry who both won gold for our borough. Sport and exercise are so important for the health and wellbeing of our residents and it is fantastic to see how much our young people enjoy such a wide variety of sports including angling.’
