Jan served as a Conservative councillor in Lower Morden for 20 years from 1982 to 2002, when she and her husband moved to Australia to be closer to family. She served as Mayoress during her husband’s Mayoral year in 1988-89.

Mayor of Merton Councillor Agatha Akyigyina said: “I was sorry to hear the news that Jan had passed away. My condolences go to her family and friends at this sad time.  She was a passionate local politician who believed in politics as a force for change and a force for good.”

Leader of Merton Conservatives Councillor Oonagh Moulton said: “Jan is remembered by current councillors and former colleagues as a force to be reckoned with in the council chamber and when she left Merton to move to Australia, she left a gap, impossible to fill. Her passing brings sadness, but many councillors in the Conservative group have fond memories of her as a highly regarded Merton councillor.

“As well as serving as Mayoress, Jan will be remembered for her strong interest in social services. She was instrumental here in implementing the recommendations from the Macpherson report which followed the Stephen Lawrence inquiry.”
