Merton Council has organised for major scheduled roadworks in Merton town centres to be suspended from Thursday 27 November until Monday 5 January to ease congestion as much as possible during the festive season.
The suspension will apply to all works carried out by utility companies in town centres. Emergency roadworks in Plough Lane will have to continue until 12 December.
Merton’s cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration, Councillor Andrew Judge, said: “Suspending major scheduled roadworks for five weeks during the Christmas period makes life easier for residents and keeps Merton’s roads moving. We know how busy roads can get during the festive season and stopping these works will encourage more people to visit town centres and do their Christmas shopping at local businesses. We are only able to insist on works stopping on the roads which we maintain. There may be some roads, like those in Morden town centre, which are managed by TfL, that we have no say over, but we have asked them to restrict roadworks over Christmas where possible.”
