Major expansion works across Merton primary schools this summer have been completed in time for the return of pupils starting the new autumn term.
Some of the works undertaken include brand new extension buildings at Hillcross, Merton Abbey and Pelham Primary Schools, the opening of the new block at Singlegate Primary School following extensive adaptation, and adaptations to allow Dundonald Primary School to provide an extra class while the permanent extension works are undertaken. 15 other schools have benefitted from maintenance works the council has commissioned, including new boilers and roof replacements.
All the works at primary schools have been completed to ensure the schools are ready for the new term.
Merton’s cabinet member for education, Councillor Martin Whelton, said: “The works completed over the summer will mean our children will have good quality school buildings in which to learn. Our successful £80 million expansion programme means that we are able to offer more children a place at a local school as we live up to our commitment to providing 2,000 more school places over the next four years. As these children move through primary school, we are working on how best to meet the inevitable increased demand for secondary school places in the future.”
