Residents aged 50 and over can now book themselves onto one of many exciting courses on offer at Merton’s 13th annual Celebrating Age Festival.
The Celebrating Age Festival, which is co-ordinated by Age UK Merton and funded by Merton Council, takes place in September each year and provides Merton’s residents over the age of 50 with opportunities to learn new activities and meet new people. This year, courses include Zumba, Tai Chi and lip reading. There are also outings, park walks and a trip to Brighton.
Last year, the festival ran over 150 events throughout the borough including outings, exhibitions, dances and cream teas which attracted around 6000 participants from all areas of Merton.
By showcasing what’s available for older people in the borough, the festival looks to raise the profile of older residents in the community, celebrate Merton’s cultural diversity, and promote the gaining of new skills and knowledge whilst also encouraging people to stay healthy in both mind and body.
Merton Council’s cabinet member for adult social care and health Councillor Caroline Cooper-Marbiah said: “Celebrating Age is a great initiative which brings the over 50s together to discover new interests and learn different skills. It is an opportunity to start new activities and make sure you keep active. There is something there for everyone, so I hope you will come along and join in!”.
