Merton school children get an out of this world experience

Children from Abbotsbury Primary School in Morden spoke to staff from NASA by video conference in a special space study lesson last week (7 October).

During the video call, pupils and teachers got to speak to Dr Karwan Rostem and his colleague Ed who are both astrophysicists for the organisation. They explained to the children how their job involves using telescopes with a wide range of lenses to look at the universe as well as an instrument they are designing to record the cosmic sounds made by the big bang.

The call was set up as part of the pupil’s space study lessons with Merton’s cabinet member for children services, Councillor Maxi Martin present.

Merton Council’s cabinet member for children’s services, Councillor Maxi Martin, said: “I was delighted to have the opportunity to be with our children for this once in a lifetime experience.”

Headteacher of Abbotsbury Primary, Ro Maybury, said: This is part of our exciting creative curriculum and our way of inspiring scientists of the future.”

Sivane Sriramesh, a year five student, said: “I felt privileged to have the opportunity to communicate with NASA!”
