Mitcham bandstand wins prestigious award

Mitcham’s colourful bandstand is the winner of a prestigious national award celebrating projects that make a positive impact in public spaces.

The bandstand called ‘What goes around’ was recognised in the hotly contested Pineapple Awards which recognise excellence in placemaking.

The bandstand won in the best ‘Activation’ category with the judges finding it ‘offers a striking focal point for the community, and it was clear from the presentation how joyous this project was – for the team delivering and the community it has provided for.’

Last summer, the bandstand stood at the heart of Mitcham Fair Green and hosted over 50 free events and activities.

From classes and performances to creative workshops – it was a programme created by the community, for the community – providing a welcoming space where people could come together, connect, and celebrate local talent.

The Pineapple Awards, organised by The Developer magazine and held in partnership with the Design Council, celebrate outstanding places that bring communities to life.

There were 129 shortlisted projects which competed across 20 categories at this year’s awards. The live judging took place at the Festival of Pineapples from 24-26 February – a free to attend online judging event where finalists presented their projects to the judges in front of a live audience.
