A busy high street has been designated as a 20 miles per hour zone to improve safety for road users and pedestrians.
Merton Council, after consultation with Wimbledon Village Business Association and a number of local groups and societies, including Wimbledon Village Stables has reduced the speed limit in Wimbledon Village High Street from 30 miles per hour to 20 miles per hour.
Merton Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Councillor Martin Whelton, said: “Wimbledon Village High Street is a major route, which is used by through traffic as well as residents and visitors to the village.
“The new 20 miles per hour zone will slow down vehicles and help to make the high street calmer and safer for everyone, including cyclists, pedestrians, horses and riders. As a borough we support 20 mph zones and our aspiration is to roll it out across the borough which will make our roads safer for pedestrians.”
