Brand new litter bins that were chosen by Merton residents have started to appear across the borough as the installation programme gets under way.
The choice of the new style bins was made following a public consultation held last November in which visitors to the Civic Centre were asked to choose their favourite from a selection on display in the foyer.
Many different types and styles were on show for ten days but the bin that had it in the bag and ended up the clear winner was the Wybone LB-20. It is a black and gold fibreglass bin that is stronger and much larger than the current bins. All will be fixed to footpaths.
The bins will soon be appearing in all of Merton’s town centres featuring the borough logo as well as the name of the particular town centre.
Wimbledon’s have already been fitted to meet the start of Wimbledon Fortnight and Colliers Wood’s have also been fitted. The bins for Mitcham, Morden and Raynes Park are scheduled to be installed by autumn.
Councillor Russell Makin, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “This new initiative will enhance the appearance of each town centre area by improving the cleanliness of the streets. It’s also pleasing that the people who took part in the survey have contributed to the look of Merton’s town centres.
“Hopefully the appearance of these new bins will encourage people to be responsible for their own litter and to dispose of it properly.”
