Christmas Shopping Cheer

Merton offers a helping hand for elderly and disabled Xmas shoppers

Merton Council has teamed up with Wimbledon’s Centre Court Shopping Centre and voluntary groups to provide a special Christmas shopping trip for those who find it difficult to get to the shops.

The invitation is extended to people with disabilities, their companions, pensioners and anybody with mobility problems who would like a ride to and from the shops.

The event will take place on Sunday, 25 November from 2pm to 4.30pm in Centre Court, Wimbledon and will feature carol singing and free gift-wrapping. The Mayor, Councillor Stuart Pickover will be attending.

Anyone who would like a lift to and from the shops for this event, should call their local voluntary group, or contact Merton Voluntary Services Council on 0208 685 1771, or the Transport Section, at Merton Council directly on 0208 545 4790/4795, or fax on 0208 545 4787.

Councillor Russell Makin, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We hope that this trip helps make the Christmas shop easy and hassle free. The Council is grateful to Centre Court and the other voluntary organisations who have made the event possible.”
