Merton Council is investing £450,000 in its Canons Leisure Centre in Mitcham over December and January.
The council is working with its leisure centre managing company, Greenwich Leisure, on the major refurbishment of the machinery behind the scenes which maintains the temperature of the pools and ventilation of the building. The overhaul will improve the efficiency of the building’s energy consumption and help maintain the condition of the pools to a high standard for the borough’s residents.
In order for the works to be completed ready for early New Year, the pools and showers at Canons Leisure Centre will be closed from 21 December 2009 to 4 January 2010. The fitness suite and sports hall facilities will still be available during this period. However, the council recommends customers contact the leisure centre directly on 020 8640 8543 to check for any timetable alterations that may affect classes.
Merton Council cabinet member for environment and leisure services, Councillor David Simpson said: “The significant investment we are making will ensure that Canons will continue to provide our residents with a well serviced pool and gym. We do ask local residents to bear with us while we make these important improvements and apologise for any inconvenience the closure may cause. Providing good quality sporting facilities for our residents is important to us as they greatly contribute to making Merton a healthy place to live.”
