Do it yourself in Merton’s libraries

Morden library is the latest in Merton to launch the new self-service technology this week.

From this Monday (14 December), residents have been able to borrow and return books themselves using the new streamlined service at Morden.

Self-service technology is already up and running at Mitcham, Wimbledon, Raynes Park and Pollards Hill libraries, allowing users privacy to borrow what they want and with shorter queuing times.

With staff no longer required to check books in and out, they now have more time available to offer advice and information and interact more personally with residents to ensure they are getting the most out of their local library. Online resources are also widely available in libraries across the borough allowing residents to join the library, renew books online, view the library catalogue and place reservations for stock as well as access several subscription based electronic reference resources like Encyclopaedia Brittanica, Who’s Who and Oxford Online.

Following brief library closures to install the system, the service will go live at West Barnes and Donald Hope libraries on 25 January and 8 March respectively. All libraries will have self-service technology in place by the end of March 2010.

This new technology is part of the ongoing work to make Merton’s libraries more interactive community venues offering education and training courses, information, social activities and spaces whilst also continuing to focus on their core aims of delivering a quality DVD and book stock.

Cabinet member for housing and community services, Councillor Linda Scott said: ‘We are working hard to put residents’ needs first by offering them new services which will improve their library experience. As a result of all the enhancements taking place, Merton’s libraries now truly offer something for everybody in our community’.
