Christmas shoppers buying e-readers, mobile phones, tablets or computers are being encouraged to add a library e-gift card to their present.
The free e-gift cards are now available to pick up at all seven of Merton Council’s award-winning libraries, giving library users free access to more than 30,000 titles in electronic formats.
If the recipient is not yet a library member, they can sign up for their free membership online or in any of Merton’s seven libraries which are in Wimbledon, Mitcham, Pollards Hill, West Barnes, Raynes Park, Morden and Colliers Wood.
Library members can choose from a range of free e-books and e-magazines which can be viewed on computers, e-readers, tablets and smartphones. A selection of e-audiobooks is also available as well as access to e-encylopaedias, reference and study materials. These can all be downloaded for up to 21 days with the option of renewing or returning them early.
Merton Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Culture, Councillor Nick Draper, said: “If you are buying someone an e-reader, tablet, smartphone or computer this Christmas, you can also give them free access to thousands of books and magazines with a library e-gift card.
“This can start a new chapter in their library membership by enabling them to download e-books online between visits to their local branch with no risk of incurring library fines.”
