Prepare ahead for Back to School

If you’ve got ‘Back to School’ in the back of your mind, take some of the load off the last couple of weeks of summer holidays by preparing ahead for the kids’ return.

With the high cost of living, starting early means you can shop around – often the best way to get a deal and save money on essential items. Looking at reused or recycled school supplies is another great way to save, and care for the environment.

We’ve put together some reminders to help you get started:

  • Cost of living grant. There is support and advice available in Merton if you are struggling with the cost of living, and financial help is available to those most in need with life’s essentials including school uniform. See our website a wide range of information: merton.gov.uk/CostOfLiving.
  • Do an audit! If you’ve been avoiding going into the cupboards, now is the time! Check out what’s already there that still fits the kids and can be re-used, and try only to get items that plug in the gaps.
  • Look around for free pre-loved items. There are ways to get good quality, pre-loved items for free, whether it’s school uniform, stationery, backpacks or books. Check out local Facebook groups or use your school’s swap-shop if it’s available.
  • Buy second-hand. Check out charity shops and marketplaces for school stuff, you can often come across unwanted gifts and unused items that have been donated.
  • Buying new? Get in early. The earlier you can buy school items the better, it is the surest way of finding the things you need in stock. If the item you need is gone, create an alert so you know when it’s back in stock.
  • Multi-packs. Multipacks are often better value and a great way to save money. If it’s more than you need, consider splitting the cost with another parent or carer.
  • Got a reading-list? Merton libraries can help. If your kids have been asked to read books over the summer ready for their return to school, check out Merton’s libraries for an amazing array of titles.
  • Don’t forget to check your eligibility for Free School Meals. Over 24% of students in Merton are eligible for Free School Meals, don’t forget to check your family’s eligibility. Free school meals are available under the ‘pupil premium’ that provides funding of up to £1,320 per eligible student. Schools can use this money to support children by providing new equipment, additional teaching staff, and a nutritious meal.
