Merton Council has been ranked as one of the top performing Councils in the UK for climate action amongst Councils, according to Climate Emergency UK, who have just published their second edition of the Council Climate Action Scorecards.
We improved on our 2023 score by 7%, taking the overall score to 67%, whilst the UK average was 38%. As well as placing strongly overall in the top 10, we ranked first in the country for Planning & Land Use. This is the second time that Climate Emergency UK has undertaken this assessment of what councils can do for climate action. Merton Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Civic Pride and Climate Change, Councillor Eleanor Stringer, said:
I’m delighted that we’ve once again been recognised as one of the leading Councils in the UK on climate action. We recognise there’s more to do, but the improved score shows we are continuing to support community climate projects, helping residents cut their energy bills and contributing to a greener Merton.
Merton Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Cleaner Streets, Councillor Stuart Neaverson, said:
I’m pleased to see our ambitious plans for a cleaner Merton have been recognised in the Climate Action scorecards. A 23% improvement on the previous Waste Reduction & Food score demonstrates that the recent changes to our street cleaning and waste collection service are working.
