Merton Council is showing the way to get around town easily with the launch of its new wayfinding signs.

The project was initiated in 2008 as part of the Mitcham town centre regeneration programme, but has been extended across the borough.

Residents in Mitcham and Colliers Wood will be the first to benefit from the new column-like monolith signs and pedestrian fingerposts. Wimbledon, Morden and Raynes Park will see their signs lowered into place by the end of the summer.

All part of the council’s £2 million investment in improving the borough’s streets, the 15 monoliths and 60 fingerposts have been carefully designed to clearly direct people to where they need to go. Each monolith displays information about the local area and public transport connections, a colour map of the surrounding area as well as local historical facts specific to each town centre. The monolith signs will be located to direct pedestrians to and from the main transport hubs and within and around the town centre areas. They will be supported by a network of wayfinding fingerposts that will also provide a link for pedestrians between neighbouring areas.

Merton Council cabinet member for finance and regeneration Councillor Diane Neil Mills said: “These new signs are practically designed and clear to follow and improve the look of our streets. Merton has a lot to shout about and is full of great places to visit. These signs clearly direct people to where they want to go and give them the opportunity to find out a little about their local area – maybe they will even discover something new about where they live.”
