The Mayor of Merton, Councillor Sally Kenny, said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh and our thoughts and condolences are with the Royal Family as they mourn their loss.

“Prince Philip made a tremendous contribution to public life, both as the Queen’s Consort, and through his own tireless work for charities and public engagements over more than 70 years. He leaves an incredible legacy through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, which equips young people with a range of life skills.”

In line with all public buildings in the UK, we have arranged for the Union flag outside the Civic Centre to be flown at half mast, while the country pays its respects.

Merton residents are invited to add a message to our online book of condolence, which will be open until 6pm the day after the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.

In Merton, there are two locations where the public can lay flowers. These are at Mitcham Jubilee Clock Tower and the area outside the New Wimbledon Theatre. Please observe social distancing if you wish to lay a floral tribute.
